Neptun is an iOS app for type 1 and type 2 diabetics. With Neptun, it is very easy to keep a mobile diabetes diary for blood sugar, insulin and other values. The app’s user interface allows the user to keep an overview of his nutritional data and blood glucose readings at all times, giving him full control over his state of health. Comprehensive filter, comment and setting options help in this regard. The diary can also be exported.
Neptun can be connected to a Roche Accu-Chek Aviva Connect/Guide measuring device via Bluetooth and the Pendiq Insulin Pen 2 to synchronise the measurement data with the app and diary. The app stores all values centrally in Apple Health. The user can also use the data from other nutrition, fitness and health apps for the therapy overview. A “mobile coach” supports the user with rule-based tips. The app’s extended operating option via the Apple Watch rounds off the range of functions.
The primary goal of Neptun is to implement a clear and comprehensive diary view with all health and medically relevant data. The app is meant to allow simple, fast operability of the frequent functions such as the input of values with as little interaction as possible. In addition, numerous, complex technical-medical requirements had to be taken into account, along with various user requirements for functionality and operability. The technical aspects also included the connection of Accu-Chek blood sugar meters via Bluetooth Low Energy and the integration of the app with Apple Health.
We developed a native iOS app with Apple Watch in mind, whose user interface has been tailored to the needs of users in numerous iterations and user studies. Incremental feedback from experts and users has added more and more functionality to the app, making Neptun one of the market leaders among diabetes apps with a wide range of functions for a great number of users.
Its implementation as a native iOS app allowed us to efficiently implement the BLE connection to the measuring devices and integrate it with other health data from the user via Apple Health, enabling significant added value for therapy tracking.
